Three Bloomington high school students qualified for the State High School Debate Tournament following their strong showing at the section tournament Dec. 1-2.

Jefferson seniors Kehan Chen and Shae Ross and Kennedy junior Addison Wendt earned at-large bids to the state tournament. Wendt placed 3rd overall, Ross placed 5th and Chen placed 19th, the best the team has ever collectively placed at the section tournament.

Students wrote pieces of legislation to debate at the section tournament, with Bloomington’s team submitting bills dealing with student loans and U.S. trade policy.

The state tournament is Jan. 12-13 at the University of Minnesota.
