Bloomington Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric Melbye earned a 2023 Superintendents to Watch award from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). Dr. Melbye is one of 25 superintendents from around the country selected for the honor in recognition of their innovative and effective use of technology to engage and inform the school community, and to expand two-way communication and outreach efforts.

“Each of these leaders have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to championing innovative communication strategies to advance their district’s success,” said NSPRA Executive Director Barbara M. Hunter, APR.

Now in his third year as superintendent, Dr. Melbye prioritizes effective communication with all stakeholders. He launched Melbye Monthly, a video series, and the Chalk Talk e-newsletter to inform and engage community stakeholders. He recently led the district's new strategic plan process, is active in the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and Noon Rotary, and seeks feedback from diverse community residents. His in-person and video communications complement a very approachable, engaging style.

“At his core, Dr. Melbye cares about people. He recognizes that his role is to serve the Bloomington community,” said Oak Grove Elementary School Principal Brian Cline. “No experience better encapsulates all he does for our school district than his leadership of our new Strategic Plan. He recognized the need to update it, and led a process that was the most engaging, collaborative work I have ever participated in during my 20 years in Bloomington Public Schools.”

Each year NSPRA recognizes up to 25 superintendents as Superintendents to Watch. Honorees have fewer than five years of superintendent experience and demonstrate dynamic, fast-paced leadership with strong communication at its core. This year, NSPRA had more than 70 nominees to choose from, a record number.

Honorees will be recognized at the NSPRA 2024 National Seminar in Seattle in July.
